Your Action Plan For How To Get A Job Today!
How to get a job is the question on the minds of 13.5 million Americans and millions more around the world. Everyone wants to know what the secret is.
I have worked in HR for almost 20 years and I see the anxiety on the job seeker’s face when she walks into a job interview. All she really wants at the end of the day is to find a new job. And after going on job interview after job interview with no luck, she is frustrated, tired and angry.
As a Hiring Manager, I know what we need from her to give her the job. We need her to articulate to us why she could solve our problems. You see, the job interview isn’t about you. Even though the questions “seem” as if it’s about you. It’s about the employer and what you can do for them. It’s about their issues, their problems, their goals.
And too many people walk into the job interview to talk about themselves. The Hiring Managers don’t care what “you” want. They care about what they need to do to succeed. They care about the fact that customers are complaining. They care about their projects being delayed. About their high employee turnover. About their low sales. They don’t want to hire another employee to just take up space on their payroll every month. They want to hire someone who can deliver on the job and help them solve some of these problems.
And if you really get “this”, you will understand why more so many job applicants are struggling in their job interviews. You probably think you are there to talk about yourself and you…focus on selling yourself. But the key to your success to get a job fast is to focus on what the employer needs and wants.
If you have ever wondered why Hiring Managers are attracted to a certain type of candidate and uninterested in others, this is why. Something was missing in her job interview where she failed to clearly outline why she was the best candidate and what she can do for them.
Here’s how I want you to think about this.
When you go to a buffet restaurant, chances are you circle the buffet tables and pick and choose what you want. It’s highly unlikely that you will pick up everything off the table, even though you have a lot of choices available to you.
The job interview presents the same unique challenge to you. You have a lot to offer. But instead of putting the entire buffet out… you want to put out only what the employer needs and wants. Why? Because you only have a limited window of opportunity during a 15 minute telephone interview or 60 minute face to face interview to show them you have what they WANT and NEED. That’s how to get a job.
So, how do you go about doing this? Simple. Here is your step-by-step action plan to make this happen:
Step 1. Analyze and identify exactly what the company needs and wants;
Step 2. Make a checklist of what they are looking for in an ideal candidate;
Step 3. Match it up with what you have to offer them identifying where you may not meet their expectations;
Step 4. Write out a list of potential questions they may ask you, including those about your weaknesses;
Step 5. Prepare your answers to each question (in advance) to show them what you can do for them and address any objections they may have to hiring you…and practice them!
This process is simple but not necessarily easy. Most people do some level of research before the job interview and may even think about their answers but very few invest the time necessary to ensure they get a job offer.
